062/22 News Release Cell Phone Sim Card Swap Scam
September 27, 2022
about a cell phone sim card swap scam that is occurring. There have been cases where the complainant’s received a text message from their cellular phone carrier stating that a sim card exchange had been requested.
When the complainant’s clicked on the link, it granted the unknown suspect to
gain control over the complainant’s phone number and gain access to their
financial accounts. In one particular incident, the suspect called police with the
complainant’s phone number and stated that he was going to shoot his wife.
Officer’s then responded to the complainant’s home under the guise that a
shooting was about to occur. It was later discovered that the complainant was a
victim of swatting, where a prank call is made to the police which results in a
heavy police response to an address.

September 13, 2022
CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a male who is wanted for Arson in the First Degree.
On Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at approximately 2:19 a.m., an unknown suspect arrived at the complainant’s residence in the Manoa area in an SUV. The suspect poured an accelerant onto the complainant’s vehicle then set it on fire and fled the scene.

There has been a case where the complainant was approached by a male in the
Kaneohe area who stated that they were a tourist and needed to use the
complainant’s cellular phone. The complainant let the male use his phone and
later discovered that the male transferred money from his Venmo and Cash app
accounts into another account. Do not let strangers use your cellular phone. If an emergency call needs to be made, make the call for them.

054/22 News Release - Phone Scan
August 17, 2022
CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department want to warn the public about a phone scam that is occurring.
There have been several cases where the complainants have received a phone call from a male who stated that they were with the Honolulu Police Department and that they were investigating a federal crime. They were then instructed to pay a monetary fine. The complainants became suspicious and called back the number on the caller ID. Upon calling the number, the call was connected to the Pearl City Police station where it was discovered that the phone number had spoofed and no such call was made from HPD.
Law enforcement agencies including the Honolulu Police Department will never contact the public and request for payment to be made.
PHONE SPOOFING
There is an app that allows phone spoofing. It conceals the number of the phone being used and uses another phone number to appear in your caller ID.
It can appear to be a Federal Government Agency or your local police department. This can also be used to imitate utility companies, Hawaiian Electric Company or Board of Water Supply, in order to collect false debts.
Do not discuss vital information with anyone who calls. Hang up, check your telephone book for the proper number of the agency identified in the call.

053/22 News Release - Jewelry Thefts
August 16, 2022
public about jewelry thefts targeting senior citizens that is occurring in the Pearl City and Waipahu areas.
There have been reports of unknown middle eastern females approaching senior citizens under different ruses to get close to them so that she can steal their jewelry. In one case, the female approached an elderly male in the parking lot of the Waipahu CVS store and tried to sell him jewelry. The female told the male that he needed to remove his watch in order to try on some rings. The male complied with her request and removed his watch and gave it to her. When the male decided to not purchase the rings, she placed his watch in a bag along with some of her rings and informed him that the rings were a gift. The male later realized that the female took his watch and returned a fake watch instead.
In another case, a female approached an elderly male in the parking lot of the Pearl City Walmart store and convinced him to buy a necklace. The female placed the necklace around his neck then took his necklace that he was originally wearing. The male later realized that his necklace had been stolen.
Please do not purchase any jewelry from strangers on the streets. Purchases
should only be made through reputable dealers or stores. Do not let strangers place jewelry items on you.

CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a male who is wanted for Attempted Sex Assault in the First Degree which occurred in the Honolulu area.
On Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at approximately 4:00 a.m., an unknown male approached the victim outside her residence on Kinau Street in the Honolulu area. The male wanted a cigarette from the victim but she refused. The male then demanded sex from the victim and brandished a knife. A struggled ensued and the female was able to fight off the male and fled on foot towards Piikoi Street.
